This coming Winter season (2007-07) CYA will offer a house recreational program for players from 1st through 12th grade and participate in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League program, commonly known as Travel or Select (generally for players in 4th to 8th grade). Games for Travel/Select and House begin in December and run through mid-March; practice for the Travel/Select program begins in October; House practices begin in December. Online registration is scheduled to September 15th and run until early November (the exact dates will be announced at a later time); a walk-in registration session is usually held in the 2nd part of September at Chantilly HS (exact date to be announced at a later time).
Registration cost for grades 2-12 is $120.50 and for grade 1 is $90.50 ($5.50 of the registration fee covers the Fairfax County use fee). A $25 late fee will be added after October 15th. In addition, those players selected for Travel Basketball will pay a $50.00 supplemental fee to cover Fall costs.
NOTE: CYA does not offer a Fall basketball league.
HOUSE RECREATIONAL PROGRAM
The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd grade, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition. The 3rd through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they will play some games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale. Skills assessments (to assist in the player drafts) for Grades 3-8 are generally held in early to mid-November. During the Winter season, teams in grades 2-12 play one game and hold one 1-hour practice per week from December through February( Girls Grades 9-12 and Boys Grades 11-12 may play 2 games on select weekends). Tournaments for grades 4-12 are held in March.
NOTE: For Boys Grades 9-10, skills assessments are held in late November, after the local high schools hold their team tryouts: GIrls Grades 9-12 and Boys Grades 11-12 generally do not hold skills assessments -- teams are assigned by the league administrator in cooperation with the coaches based on previous knowledge of participant skills. Players in Grades 1-2 do not hold skills assessments but are assigned to teams based on schools and neighborhoods.
COUNTY TRAVEL/SELECT TEAMS (FCYBL)
CYA offers those players with a higher skill level an opportunity to participate in the county-wide Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (commonly known as either "Travel" or "Select"). CYA’s FCYBL coaches are re-selected each year in September through an interview procress. During tryouts held in early October, the coaches select 10-11 players per team from among all those who sign up at registration for Travel. The number of teams per age group is determined by the talent available at tryouts (with a maximum of 3 teams per age group). Practice begins as soon as the teams are selected. This program requires a greater time commitment from participants for practice (3 hours per week) and games (1-2 per week); most games are played at gyms across Fairfax County (often outside the Chantilly area) and in Falls Church, Arlington, or Alexandria. Programs are offered at the ages of 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under, 13 and under (Boys only), 14 and under (Girls only), 15 and under (Boys), and 18 and under (Boys). The placement of players is generally determined by their age as of October 1st , with two grade exceptions allowed per team. In addition, all CYA players must reside in Fairfax County and are generally limited to our allocated zip codes (22033, 20151, 20171, 22124, and 20120), with 2 zip code exceptions allowed per team.
NOTE: Tryouts for the U15 and U18 Boys teams are held in late November after the local high schools hold their tryouts.
