House Program

Program Description

The CYA House program is offered for boys and girls in Grades 1 to 12 (Grades 4-12 only in the Spring). The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd grade, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition. The 3rd through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Winter House Program (December-March): Grades 1-12
House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they will play some games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale (though 9-10th graders will play nearly all their games at Chantilly gyms).

Practices are held once a week from Monday-Friday between the hours of 5:00 - 10:00 PM (depending on the grade level). During the regular season (mid-December to early March), there is one game per week on Saturday or Sunday (generally, only Grades 7-12 have some Sunday games). Playoffs are held for Grades 4-12 in mid-March followed by all-star games in Grades 4-8.

First and Second grade teams have 10 players per team, while 3-12th grade usually have 9 players per team. At each age level there are minimum participation rules and age-specific game rules (such as press rules and crush rules).

Grades 2-6 are officiated by volunteer referees (both youth and adult) trained by CYA Basketball. Grades 7-12 are officiated by semi-professional referees from Cardinal Basketball Officiating Association.

Spring House Program (April-June): Grades 4-12
In the Spring teams at all grades levels play at Chantilly area gyms only. Generally, teams in Grades 4-6 have one practice per week and one game per weekend. Grades 7-12 have a few organizational practices at the beginning of the season and then go to games only--one during the week and one on the weekend. There are 8 to 10 regular season games (depending on the number of teams and the grade level) followed by a post-season tournament in early June.
Some age levels may be combined in the Spring in a single league, depending on the number of sign-ups (for example, 9-12th grade girls).  Again, depending on the number of players registered per grade level, teams may have 8-10 players per team.
Grades 4-6 are officiated by volunteer referees (both youth and adult) trained by CYA Basketball. Grades 7-12 are officiated by semi-professional referees from Cardinal Basketball Officiating Association.
