Congratulations Coach Bruce Wardlaw and Meira Barnaby!

We are extremely proud to announce that Meira Barnaby and Bruce Wardlaw are winners of the Fairfax County "Champions of Character" awards for Sully District Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively!

The Champions of Character program aims to help restore the ennobling tradition of amateur athletic competition.  The awards pay tribute to the outstanding youth and adults who have demonstrated extraordinary service in the sports community while modeling the basic traits of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

The Champions of Character event, which coincides with National Character Counts Month, is presented by the FCAC with help from the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and is sponsored this year by TD Bank. Honorees were selected from those nominated by coaches, players and others in the local sports community. Awards are presented to one winner in each category—female player, male player, coach, parent— from each magisterial district in the county.

Meira Barnaby, Female Athlete of the Year

Meira has been a part of the CYA Cheerleading program from the beginning and she is a huge asset to the team.  Meira balaces her family, school and other activities so that each receives the attention it deserves.  Given her dedication to all aspects of her life, she makes the time and has the dedication needed to attend every practice and every game with a positive attitude and a smile on her face.  Meira is fun and easy going, but she is also serious when it's time to work.  Her skills have grown over the years and continue to grow, but Meira also turns her attention to teaching and assisting her teammates.  Meira takes on any role that is asked of her without complaint and can always be depended on to help get the crowd excited, no matter the score!  Meira is very deserving of this award primarily because of her hard work, but also because of her positive attitude and spirit!  Thank You Meira!

Bruce Wardlaw, Coach of the Year

Bruce Wardlaw, who tragically passed away just before the start of the 2016 spring season, had served the CYA basketball program continuously for over twenty years as an administrator, commissioner, board member, coach and even occasionally as a referee.  Bruce began his association with CYA Basketball in the early 90's when his oldest daughter Courtney began playing while in elementary school, followed just a few years later by his youngest daughter Erin.  For the past decade he coached multiple teams every season.  Over the course of his time with CYA, his teams were often made up of girls who would request him as a coach every year that they played with CYA.  In part, this was due to the success  of his teams, but it was also because he inspired loyalty by emphasizing the importance of learning, improving and encouraging skill development.  Bruce always ensured equitable playing time and fostered good sportsmanship.  Bruce... we miss you and will never forget your contribution to CYA Basketball.
