CYA SOFTBALL OPENING DAY A HIT

At the culmination of a beautiful day of softball, Sully District Supervisor Michael Frye turned on the lights at CYAs Rachel Carson Intermediate School field, inaugurating our initial season of softball under the lights.

Four games featuring teams from the 8 & Under, 12 & Under and 18 & Under leagues were played at Rachel Carson.  Other games were played at Franklin Farm, Greenbrier West Elementary, Greenbrier Park, and Poplar Tree Park as CYA softball got rolling with a vengeance.

Enthusiasm on the field, in the dugouts and in the bleachers was the order of the day at Rachel Carson, as everyone enjoyed being out in the great weather.  In the opening game at 9:00 am, the 8 & Under Marlins took on the Cubs, and the girls had a great time.  The 12 & Under matchup at 2:00 pm featured the Athletics and Yankees, each of which had already played a game earlier on Saturday but came back for more. The first 18 & Under game at 4:15 was between the well-matched Astros and Cardinals, ending in a 7-7 tie.

Games took a back seat to ceremony as CYA President Ralph Wills and Supervisor Frye made remarks photo to the large crowd on hand about the long struggle to build the field and get the lights at Rachel Carson, part of the countys efforts to bring parity to girls and boys sports programs.  Then Mr. Frye turned the switch, and the 18-U Royals and Pirates played the 6:30 game under the lights. photo

So the next time youre driving down Centreville Road or McLearen Road and see the lights on at Rachel Carson, stop by and watch a few innings of great CYA softball.  Its the beginning of many, many years of great memories for the girls (and their parents!).
